Vegan Power Frappe

Creamy, frothy, and packed with good energy — this Vegan Power Frappe is the ultimate plant-based pick-me-up. Made with cold brew coffee, maca powder, soaked cashews, and frozen banana, it’s smooth, malty, and naturally sweet — like your favorite café treat, reimagined for home.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Energizing + balanced — maca and coffee give a steady lift without the crash.
  • Lusciously creamy — soaked cashews create a dairy-free, velvety texture.
  • Naturally sweet — dates and banana keep it wholesome.
  • Quick to make — 5 minutes and a blender, that’s it.
  • Plant-based perfection — vegan, gluten-free, refined sugar–free, and nutrient-dense.

Tips From My Kitchen

  • Freeze your bananas in halves — they blend smoother and make portioning easy.
  • A high-speed blender (like a Vitamix or Ninja) gives you that silky café texture.
  • Add more ice for a thicker, milkshake-style consistency.
  • Want to skip caffeine? Replace coffee with almond milk and still get the energy boost from maca.
  • Sprinkle cacao nibs or cinnamon on top for a little barista flair.

Serving & Variations

  • Make it a Mocha Power Frappe by adding 1 tablespoon cocoa powder.
  • Blend in a scoop of vanilla protein powder for a post-workout boost.
  • For a salted caramel twist, use ½ teaspoon maple syrup and an extra pinch of sea salt.

The Story

I know, I know — I keep telling you I’m not vegan. And yet… here we are. Meet the Vegan Power Frappe.

  • Two things led to this moment:
I’ve fallen hard for a new food blog — The First Mess — and
  • I’m currently trapped inside after what feels like 30 straight days of rain in D.C. (Meanwhile, NPR has the nerve to report sunshine in Seattle. Rude.)

So yes, I needed a pick-me-up — immediately.

This frappe hits the spot. It’s smooth and creamy from soaked cashews and frozen banana, lightly sweetened with dates, and given a malty, earthy edge from maca powder. Add cold brew coffee to the mix, and you’ve got something that feels like a cross between a milkshake and a clean-energy latte.

Maca gives a gentle, sustained energy boost — not jittery like caffeine, but grounding and vibrant. Honestly, even without coffee, it gives me the same “let’s do this” kick.

There’s just one catch: you’ll need a few ingredients prepped ahead of time. Frozen banana (I always keep some on hand!), cold brew coffee (or yesterday’s leftovers), and soaked cashews (a quick 10-minute soak in boiling water does the trick).

Blend it all together, pour it over ice, and you’ve got yourself a vegan coffeehouse dream — no rainclouds required.
